Basin Transit Service began service on Monday, November 3, 1980 as a service provided by the City of Klamath Falls. Four buses operated routes Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. The regular fare was 25 cents with a 15 cent fare offered to Senior Citizens between 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M.
On March 31, 1981 basin voters voted yes by 62% to create what is now Basin Transit Service Transportation District which is approximately the size of Klamath Falls Urban Growth Boundary Area. Voters also elected on that day Basin Transit Service Transportation District first Board of Directors they were: Rev. Douglas Thompson, James Cavener, Roberta McGee, Rev. Harold Sherman, Guy Bennett, Richard Pastega, and Ron Frye. In addition to these board members the new District employed twenty (20) people.
On May 19, 1981 another election was held to ask for financial support in the form of a property tax levy in the amount of 38cents per thousand of assessed value. This ballot passed providing the necessary funding for the District.
Today the District operates five large fix route buses, three small Para-transit buses for door-to-door service for elderly and persons with disabilities and the Linkville Trolley. The District serves a population of 42,567.
